EDUCATION

No two diamonds are the same so it’s important to know the different aspects involved in determining a diamond’s quality and price before you decide to purchase one. Diamonds must be evaluated under internationally recognised standards for cut, clarity, colour and carat weight. These elements are universally known as “the 4 Cs.”

Cut

The cut is a diamond’s most important characteristic as it determines its overall beauty and how much it sparkles. Most people think the cut only refers to the shape of the diamond, however, it also refers to the cut grade.

The proportion, finish and symmetry of the external facets impact how the diamond interacts with light, and therefore the amount it sparkles. The more perfect the cut, the more sparkle you’ll see.

Clarity

Clarity represents how many invisible inclusions, or “birthmarks” the diamond has. These birthmarks are often uncrystallised carbon, created when the diamond was born up to 3 billion years ago. The majority of these birthmarks cannot be seen by the naked eye, so we use a 10x magnification loupe to identify them.

The clarity of a diamond varies on a scale from Flawless (FL), which is blemish-free, Very, Very Slight (VVS), Very Slight (VS), Slight (S) or obvious blemishes seen with the naked eye (I1-I3).

Colour

A diamond’s colour is determined on a scale from “D” (colourless) to “Z” (yellow/brown). Completely colourless diamonds are graded D, making them rare and highly valuable. Whilst most diamonds appear to have no colour to the human eye, they can have hints of colour within them.

Carat weight

A diamond’s weight is measured in carats (ct) and represents its overall size. One carat is divided into 100 points, so a diamond weighing one quarter of a carat can also be referred to as being 25 points. The heavier the diamond, the rarer and more expensive it is. That’s why a diamond with a full carat (1ct) will cost more than twice the price of two half carat (0.50ct) diamonds the same quality.
